What is clinical research

Clinical research is the stage of medical research that is conducted on human volunteers. Generally, this stage comes after basic or fundamental research (experiments on cells and animals) which focuses on assessing the efficacy and safety of the potential new treatment.
Clinical research is often based on clinical trials. These trials are strictly regulated and follow a specific protocol. All the doctors and hospitals involved in the study have to use the exact same protocol.
In the field of oncology, doctors and researchers aim to develop innovative, more effective and less toxic treatments in order to increase survival and improve quality of life.
All current treatments are the result of past studies.
Protecting participants
It is important to understand your rights when deciding to participate in a clinical study.
